Essential Skills
“In Leighton Andrews’ letter, dated 22nd December 2011, to the chief inspector of ESTYN, the minister emphasised the need to raise standards of education and training provision, attainments and infrastructure across Wales so that everyone reaches their potential.”
In line with the above mentioned letter, YMCA Wales Community College (The College) is committed to raising standards in literacy and supporting all learners, encouraging the use of essential skills qualifications in the post 16 FE Sector, and offering additional support to any learners who may have Essential Skills needs.
At present the College runs an Essential Skills assessment for all learners on Level Two Youth Work courses and all Level Three courses, and if tutors would like access to the assessment documents please contact Becky Watson Stubbs for a password for the resources on the right of this page.
An Essential Skills working group, as a sub-group of the Curriculum and Quality Standards Committee, looks at issues around Essential Skills assessment, learner involvement, and the potential issues and problems Essential Skills assessments in FE may cause.
The College is committed to not only providing support for learners, but also for tutors, who may need additional support when supporting learners, or delivering assessments.
