YMCA Wales Community College operates very differently to most further education Colleges. In the traditional sense of the word, it isn’t a college at all. Rather than using a central location, all courses are held at venues in the community and are delivered by local tutors. This provides a comfortable, familiar learning environment which appeals to everyone looking to learn new skills, from school leavers to retired people.
The College offers a wide range of learning opportunities for people across Wales, and encourages students to use what they have learned to improve the quality of life for themselves and their communities. In a recent government inspection the College was awarded record breaking grades in its sector, becoming the highest rated Adult Community-Based Learning provider in Wales.
The majority of the College’s courses lead to Open College Network (OCN) certificates which are recognised by further and higher education providers, and many employers.
Almost 3500 learners attended courses with the College during the 2005-2006 academic year, in subjects as diverse as Welsh for Adults, First aid, Computing, Counselling and Youth Work. An impressive 92% achieved their OCN certificates.
